The Balconies

Ever since they moved here from Ottawa, The Balconies have been one of our favourite live acts in the city: hooky and energetic and damned good-looking to boot. So if you're not at the Indies, Lee's Palace may very well be the best place to spend your Saturday night. Especially with Electric Six hitting the stage a couple of hours later.

Featuring the best lineup in recent history, The Indies are a not-to-be-missed affair this year. Yeah, no one cares who wins the awards but it’s a great excuse to see Shad, Hannah Georgas and, of course, the amazing, beautiful, talented, soul sister Janelle Monae! Now, if only it were in an actual venue and not a hotel….

By Saturday we’re usually pretty damn tired, but there’s no way we’re missing the final afternoon of great stripped down music. Featuring one of Canada’s greatest up and coming singer-songwriters, Aiden Knight, it’s sure to be an afternoon to remember. We know you’re liver will be begging you to sleep all afternoon but just tell it to shut up and take it like a man.

Shortpants Romance, Silver Dollar, 12pm: In person, Shortpants Romance lead singer Catherine Vien-Labeaume is as quiet and demur as they come. But on stage, the Montrealer is transformed into some kind of drunken banshee demon woman. In our experience, she's liable to soak you in beer and scream in your face with the kind of don't-give-a-fuck attitude you'd more commonly associate with someone who spent a decade living under Thatcher.
