Thursday night at The Ossington, we're throwing a party for Pussy Riot. Six awesome Toronto bands will play: Pow Wows, ATTAGIRL, Alphabot!, shy kids, The Reply, and Ryan Kamstra from Tomboyfriend. We'd hoped it would a celebration — that by now the women of Pussy Riot would be free. But instead, last Friday, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Yekaterina Samutsevich and Maria Alekhina were sentenced to two years in a Russian labour camp. All for singing an anti-Vladimir Putin song at a church in Moscow.
It might be a drop in the ocean of Putin's authoritarian ways, but we're hoping to send a little help from Toronto. Cover for the show is $5 — and all of the money will be going to help the Russian riot grrrls with their legal expenses.
