CMW 2014: The Almighty Rhombus @ Rancho Relaxo

WEDNESDAY — Toronto is a damned lucky city. Not only do we get to enjoy one of the best local music scenes in the world, we also get to be a hub for musicians visiting from the other kickass scenes nearby — whether they're heading up the St. Lawrence from Montreal or driving in from places closer to home, like Hamilton. Now, we can add the stretches of Northern Ontario to that list. The music scene in Sudbury seems to be blowing up. And The Almighty Rhombus are leading the way. The indie rockers are already getting to be familiar faces in Toronto and their latest trip to the big city brought them to the stage of Rancho Relaxo on Canadian Music Week's Wednesday night.

The room was impressively full given the mid-week timeslot, with more than a few bouncing and dancing along at the front of the stage. The band pounded through songs off their new full-length, Lucid, along with what may very well be our favourite Rhombus tune: "She Didn't Want Me" (from their self-titled EP). The highlight, though, might have been their brief cover of "The Good In Everyone." Sloan's big hit is exactly the kind of pop song that fits seamlessly among the band's own tunes — which clearly owe a debt to the Canadian indie rock of the 1990s. And as the set came to an abrupt end thanks to the festival's strict time limits, it's safe to say the fellow from Sudbury left the audience wanting more. Thankfully, it probably won't too long before Toronto gets to play host to The Almighty Rhombus once again.
