SATURDAY — It was one of the shows we were most looking forward to at this year's Canadian Music Week: a chance to catch one of our favourite Toronto bands under the big, bright, photogenic lights of the Mod Club. And The BB Guns didn't disappoint: two years after we first came across the band, they're still getting better — their sets growing stronger as they add to their list of catchy, retro, garage, punk, surf, rock tunes. It seems that every time we see them, they've recently released a new favourite: this time around it was "I Killed My Baby In Mexico" off the new Optical Sounds Psych Pop compilation.
They were, sadly, not given the festival's most promising timeslot: taking the stage at 8pm on a beautiful and warm Saturday night in May as the first of four openers for the experimental punks in No Age, who weren't scheduled to go on until midnight. So, much of the vast space of the Mod Club Theatre was still empty when it all started. But The BB Guns filled the room with their fuzz and distortion; the set is bound to have been a highlight of CMW for many of those who were there — including us. And now that we've seen them under those big, bright lights, we can't wait to see them again in a small and sweaty club, packed, late and drunk.LOOK
